Coding, also known as computer programming, is how we communicate with computers and tell them what to do. Coding can build many different kinds of programs, such as websites and apps.
Responsive Design is a type of web design approach that allows web pages to render well on all types of screen sizes while ensuring good usability. It is the way to design for a multi-device web product.
Visual Web Design focuses on an interface's visuals. Elements like typography, color, etc, all to create an engaging experience for the user. This often crosses over into user experience (UX) and user interface (UI).
My experience throughout High School is a bit of a boring experience. I'm not the most social person so I didn't actively make a lot of friends nor did I talk a whole lot, so I mostly just kept to myself for most of my time in High School. I did do a couple of interesting things such as volunteering for the Lunch Program in order to provide food for students who couldn't afford a Lunch, as well as attending an afterschool Band and a Robotics Club. Aside from all of that, I was mostly just discovering more about myself and what I wanted to do post-secondary. It was a bit of a struggle figuring out what I wanted to do, but I eventually came to the conclusion that I wanted to work in the Game Industry. I grew up playing games, and I always loved playing games. So I decided that I wanted to make Video Games. I took a lot of Media and Visual Art classes during my senior years of High School, learning more about animation, drawing, film/photography, etc. And although I wasn't the greatest artist, I still had a lot of fun, which further fueled my drive. Unbeknownst to me and the entire world however, a Pandemic was on the rise.
The COVID-19 Pandemic came out of nowhere and it left a lot of people unprepared for the toll on their mental health. Although I had a bit of experience being indoors for long periods of time (Perks of being a shut-in!), it still took a lot out of me trying to adapt. e-Learning for example was a heavy struggle, and although I'm doing a lot better when it comes to doing things remotely now, there was a lot of chaos and confusion during lockdown, and it caused me to miss out on a lot of crucial experiences back in High School, the biggest one being my graduation, or lack thereof since I couldn't have one due to COVID-19 Lockdown Protocols. So I took a Gap Year before I continued my education in order to recover my mental health. I also used this time to gain some real world work experience and got my first part-time job at a McDonald's in a Walmart.
My gap year was coming to an end and I began applying to many different colleges. My original intent was a Game Design/Development program, but many of the colleges that had these programs were inaccessible for me due to transit reasons. So I chose the next best thing: Graphic Design at Mohawk College. Mohawk College was the closest college to me, and the Graphic Design program Mohawk offered had a UX/UI stream in the 2nd year. I figured that since UX/UI is present in Video Games (In-game menus, immersive user interface, etc), this program was the next best thing. I'm currently in the last year of the program, going strong!
As of right now, I'm looking for an internship to gain more experience with UX/UI, hopefully geared towards the Video Game aspect. I hope somebody will be happy to accept me and take me under their wing!
